What is osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a holistic healing approach focusing on the body. It includes the interconnected nature of all parts and systems of the body and the importance of movement and co-operation within these systems for health: motion is lotion.

Osteopaths listen both to what you and your body are saying, we use hands on techniques to help you move towards health.

As an osteopath I am fully insured and I am registered with the General Osteopathic Council, the national governing body who oversee osteopaths and promote excellence in patient care.

         How I work, and why..

Since starting to treat patients as a massage therapist in 2000 I've had huge enthusiasm for helping people feel at home and empowered in their bodies and curiosity about how to do this better. This has led me to continuous learning from a range of medical and spiritual traditions. How I work varies, depending on what’s needed by a person, or by different parts of a person, I enjoy drawing on my many skills to give you an individual session suited to you.

I find this mixed approach effective; as beings made of body, mind and spirit, each of which are made of many parts, it’s important to support each part in the way that it needs for integration. Integration is the ongoing path of health; connecting with the energy of life that runs through each living being. My job is to help all parts of you connect and be resourced by your own life energy. I believe that you are your ultimate healer and guide; something I came to understand more deeply working with the Internal Family Systems model, which I integrate into my life and practice. As the founder of osteopathy, A T Still said: “the body is its’ own medicine chest” .

What happens at a consultation?

A typical consultation lasts an hour, first consultations 1 hour 20 minutes. We start by talking about why you’ve come to see me and I will ask some medical history questions.

How we continue depends on what type of session you need, this is chosen together based on what you have come with.

Treatment may include physical assessment and discussion, massage and manipulation, dry needling, movement exploration and coaching. It may be useful to explore the interconnection of your emotional and physical symptoms, as well as inherited movement/emotional patterns that are held in the body.

Creativity and expression, such as drawing or nature ritual can be part of your session if they are helpful. While these are less usual in physical therapy, what’s important is meeting you where you’re at with what you need.

For physical treatment you will need to wear loose, comfortable clothing or your underwear- whichever you feel more comfortable in for the chosen treatment approach.

Testimonials:

“Zoë is one of the most intuitively gifted healing practitioners I have met. I first came to Zoë after injuring my knee, she gave me a deep holistic treatment, which included rehabilitation as well as work on the injury itself. As a performer myself, I felt she really understood how important regaining my freedom of movement was. I have since returned for numerous treatments and can’t recommend her highly enough.”
